Speech Pathology
Speech Pathologists assess, diagnose and treat swallowing and communication disorders, including speech, language, fluency and voice difficulties.
Speech pathologists are Allied Health professionals who work with people across their entire lifespan. An adult might visit a speech pathologist to help them understand and find the right words to use after a stroke, or a child might need treatment to help their expressive language (putting words together and being understood) or comprehension (understanding instructions and meanings) or to help them speak more clearly if they are mispronouncing words.
Speech pathologists also work with Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) devices that allow people who find it difficult to speak or write to communicate more efficiently using technology.
Speech Pathologists also treat Swallowing disorders (Dysphagia) across all ages, which may look like any difficulty with mealtimes, from frequent choking to an inability to eat foods that require chewing.
