Exercise Physiologist or Physiotherapist: Which is Right for You?

Navigating the world of allied health can be confusing. A common question we hear is, "Should I see an Exercise Physiologist or a Physiotherapist?" While both professions are dedicated to improving your health, movement, and quality of life, they have distinct areas of expertise. Understanding the difference can help you choose the right practitioner for your needs.

What is an Accredited Exercise Physiologist (AEP)?

An Accredited Exercise Physiologist specialises in clinical exercise interventions for people with a broad range of health issues. We use exercise as medicine to manage chronic diseases, persistent pain, and disabilities. Our focus is on creating long-term, sustainable change through tailored exercise programs and lifestyle modification to improve your function, health, and well-being.

You would see an Exercise Physiologist for:
- Long-term management of chronic conditions such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, arthritis, or osteoporosis.
- Rehabilitation once the acute phase of an injury has passed, to restore full function and prevent re-injury.
- Managing persistent pain.
- Improving physical function and capacity for those with a disability.
- Exercise prescription for mental health conditions, cancer treatment and recovery, and neurological conditions.

The Key Difference

Think of it this way: A Physiotherapist is an expert in the acute management and diagnosis of injuries, often using passive, hands-on therapies plus rehabilitation exercise prescription. An Exercise Physiologist is an expert in using exercise as a long-term strategy to manage chronic conditions and improve your overall health.

At our clinic, we believe in a collaborative approach. It is common for a patient to see a Physiotherapist in the initial stages of an injury and then be referred to an Exercise Physiologist for ongoing rehabilitation and to build a robust, long-term management plan.

If you are living with a chronic condition or are looking for a long-term, active approach to managing your health and improving your function, booking an appointment with an Exercise Physiologist is an excellent step forward.
